Loft conversions are an excellent way to create additional space, adding value to your home, often without the need for planning permission. As lofts are often used for essential storage, the designer
looked carefully at how to maximise all the charming nooks and crannies as well as the space under the eaves to create a contemporary room that met all the client’s storage requirements.

We were brought in at an early stage, which was particularly important when designing the storage solutions for the loft conversion and ensuring there was adequate insulation and the rafters were spaced at distance we could use for storage. We made use of all those awkward spaces in the attic where there is not enough head room but still a lot of depth. We used the sloped alcove of loft to create pull-out show racks and also built drawer sets between the rafters so there was no wasted space. We also managed to squeeze in a wardrobed with slanting doors into a specially designated area.
In the bathroom area the clients wished to go for a boutique hotel feel and carried the oak theme through into the bathroom with a bench style vanity unit and slatted oak towel rails. The builders were also asked to create two special niches in the walls so that shallow wall cabinets could be built in, while the front of the cabinet was fitted with a mirror and a simple push mechanism opened the unit. A similar cabinet was also fitted in the main family bathroom as the clients were so impressed with this space saving storage idea.
Finally Barbara Genda was also involved in designing wardrobes for the little girl's bedroom, as well as a integrated desk and lots of shelving units and a bed, designed on one she had seen in a magazine. A lovely window seat was built into the window bay with colourful storage units for the girl's toys.
The clever, irregular bookcase design provides a real talking point in this space. The client returned to commission Barbara Genda to create this eye-catching bookcase in a white spray paint finish, which perfectly complements this open-plan, ground floor living space.
